NACME/GEM 2003 Conference
Each year, the NACME Forum brings together over 300 public and
private sector leaders to provide information, share best practices
and develop strategies for increasing minority participation
in engineering and technology.
From May 28-30, 2003, in Houston, Texas, the NACME-GEM
Conference, "Engineering Collaborations:
Preparing Technology Talent for the Economic Turnaround," devoted its
program to the imminent Supreme Court ruling on the University of
Michigan admissions cases. While the outcome of those decisions is
well-known, the issues they embody are likely to persist.
We have assembled an abridged version of remarks made in various
sessions - beginning with excerpts of the Keynote Address, followed
by acceptance of the Reginald H. Jones Distinguished Service Award,
and concluding with introductions (edited) and observations (reproduced
in their entirety) made in the President's Plenary. NACME presents
these contributions to preserve a record of the conviction and advice
offered by academic leaders at a particularly volatile juncture in the
history of U.S. higher education.
