Site Visit to New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT)
|
This winter, the University Programs team and Dr. Irving P. McPhail, NACME's executive vice-president and chief operating officer, made a one-day site visit to the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Underrepresented minority students represent twenty-three percent of NJIT's full-time enrollment in engineering. The institution enrolls more than 1,200 students annually.
As a result of NJIT's first-year student support programs, retention in engineering exceeds seventy percent at the end of the first year. These results are largely due to
the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), under the leadership of Executive Director Tony Howell. The mission of EPO is to provide educational opportunities and improve educational outcomes for populations underrepresented in mathematics, science, engineering, business, architecture, and engineering technology. The comprehensive full-service support program provides academic advisors who monitor the students' progress throughout their undergraduate experience.
Faculty at NJIT are actively involved in the pre-engineering effort. Dr. Howard
Kimmel, professor of Chemical Engineering, leads the Center for Pre-College Programs, which serves as a feeder to NJIT. Dr. Angelo Perna is director of the McNair Achievement Program, which encourages low-income and first-generation or underrepresented students majoring in science, engineering and mathematics disciplines to continue and enroll in post baccalaureate programs, with the goal of obtaining doctoral degrees.
More than eighty percent of the NACME Scholars supported at NJIT are pursuing their baccalaureate degrees. NACME is encouraged by NJIT's commitment to the shared vision of ensuring diversity with equity in engineering education and the engineering workforce.
